Place-based Art Installation at the Old Police HQ in Crescent, Salford

Anyone travelling through Crescent recently may have spotted a splash of colour appearing on the Old Police Station.

A major new public artwork, In The Midst of It All, has now been unveiled, transforming the building into a bold creative statement as part of Salford’s centenary celebrations.

Commissioned by the Crescent Culture Collective, the installation has been created by local artists Mike Emerson and Sian Ford of MikeSian Studio, whose work is known for its bold graphics, strong use of colour and connection to place.

Located opposite the University of Salford’s iconic red sign and sat on one of the city’s busiest routes, the artwork reflects Crescent’s position at the centre of education, culture, creativity and everyday life in Salford.

The artists explored local history and heritage as part of developing the piece, bringing together references to Salford’s industrial past alongside its creative future. The result is a striking new addition to the area which celebrates the energy, people and identity that make Salford what it is.

The project forms part of the Crescent Culture Collective’s wider programme, which aims to support cultural activity, create opportunities for local artists and strengthen connections across Crescent.

Solid Ground project managed delivery of the installation on behalf of the Crescent Partnership, working alongside partners and suppliers (including Astra Signs) to help bring this new art installation to life.

Backed by funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund alongside investment from Crescent Partners – ECF, Salford City Council and the University of Salford – the artwork forms part of the wider £2.5bn Crescent Salford masterplan.

Public art has an important role to play during regeneration projects. It can bring colour and character to places while creating moments that encourage people to stop, look closer and connect with an area differently.
